Surface Design
When it comes to surface design, aside from incising and punctation, most of the design techniques Marty uses today he came up with himself. After graduating from his apprenticeship with Ivan Gundrum, Marty took the techniques he had been taught and built upon those with a keen sense of creativity and efficiency. Firing
There are many techniques for firing clay depending on the desired texture and color one would like to achieve. Marty has mastered some techniques such as kiln firing, indigenous pit firing, feather or hair firing, and fume firing; but he often enjoys experimenting and coming up with new, fun firing techniques of his very own.
