"Hidden Heritage"
H: 15”
A tribute to my Native American ancestors. Sculpted, with incised Native American designs and motifs
When my mom was young she was often asked to portray a Native American in school plays. When she asked her grandparents, who raised her, if she had any Native American blood, her grandmother replied “Go ask your granddad, he has more than I do.” They told her stories of her ancestors, but always cautioned her not to tell anyone outside of the family. This was typical for those who chose to stay in the Southeast and assimilate into the white culture and hide their heritage. Native American heritage was not generally considered an honor back then.
